Woohoo! Tim has completed the Marathon des Sables unharmed…if a little sunburnt. Tim says the support and messages received helped him through the event, but it was his strategy of breaking the longer runs (83km in one day!) into bursts of 10km, according to the checkpoints, that helped him finish in the top 550 – there were nearly 1200 competitors!

Luckily all eight of Tim’s tent mates crossed the finishing line too, making for an amazing atmosphere at the end. The eight got on really well, developing a brilliant camaraderie which was needed under the conditions – the temperature reached 54oC on “the long day!” Tim says “It was part of the challenge and obviously I was expecting it but there were people flaking out all over the place and it’s really easy to get yourself into trouble.”

However, the spectacular views from running up and along the mountainous ridge more than compensated for the conditions in this “incredible” event. But it’s not one Tim would repeat, “It’s a huge commitment, both in terms of time and financially. Plus there are lots of other things I’d like to do.”

So, Tim’s taking a well deserved break before hoping to compete in triathlons. However, the completion of the MDS does not mark the end of High5ives. James Young, Account Executive at Manchester LYNX, is stepping up to the plate – quite literally! Every Thursday lunchtime the Manchester office get the opportunity to taste heaven, as James prepares his speciality sandwiches for a small fee.

So far James’ Lunch Bistro has raised £454.97, nearly half way to his total aim of £1,000 which he hopes to achieve by completing the Manchester marathon.   James is running the 26 miles dressed as “Where’s Wally,” so if you’re at the event see if you can spot him! All donations are in aid of AMREF, if you would like to help please visit James’ Justgiving. Good luck James!
